美国宇航局表示，“高层大气研究卫星”于2005年完成任务以来，受地心引力牵引，高度逐渐下降。这颗长10.6米、直径4.5米的卫星，估计最快在美国时间2011年9月22日、最晚24日(23日前后加减一天)便将坠入地球大气层。虽然卫星通过大气层时多数会被烧毁，但估计仍有多达26块、总重量约500公斤的残骸落到地球某处，最重的一块约重136公斤。
